Historic Milestone: Ambedkarite Buddhists Make Landmark Debut at White House Vesak Day Celebration
Washington, D.C., June 11, 2026: In a historic moment for the global Ambedkarite Buddhist community, the Ambedkar Association of North America (AANA) proudly participated in a special Vesak Day celebration at the White House, marking the first-ever representation of Ambedkarite Buddhists at the prestigious event.
Organized by the International Buddhist Association of America in collaboration with the White House Office of Faith, the ceremony brought together Buddhist leaders, monastics, diplomats, and community representatives from across the United States and around the world. The event honored the birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana of Lord Buddha while highlighting Buddhism’s timeless message of peace, compassion, wisdom, and human dignity.
A defining moment of this year’s celebration was the invitation extended to the President of the Ambedkar Association of North America, symbolizing the growing recognition of Ambedkarite Buddhists and their contributions to religious, cultural, and civic life in the United States.
Senior Advisor Paula White-Cain and Faith Director Jennifer S. Korn from the White House Office of Faith joined Buddhist leaders and representatives in celebrating the teachings of the Buddha and promoting interfaith harmony and cooperation. The gathering also featured distinguished monastics representing the three major Buddhist traditions—Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana—demonstrating the unity and diversity of the global Buddhist community.
The event gained further international significance with the participation of diplomatic representatives from several countries, including India, Nepal, Thailand, Cambodia, Mongolia, and other nations with deep Buddhist heritage. Their presence underscored the worldwide influence of Buddhist values and the importance of cultural and diplomatic engagement.
Representing Ambedkarite Buddhists of Indian origin, AANA continues to promote the ideals of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the principal architect of India’s Constitution and a champion of social justice. Guided by his vision and the teachings of Lord Buddha, the organization advocates equality, compassion, wisdom, and social harmony.
Speaking on the occasion, Smitha, President of the Ambedkar Association of North America, said the invitation was not only an honor for the organization but also a recognition of millions of Ambedkarite Buddhists around the world who follow the teachings of Lord Buddha and the transformative vision of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar.
“This historic invitation reflects the diversity and richness of the Buddhist community in America and represents an important step toward greater recognition and inclusion,” she said.
AANA stated that its participation in the national celebration reaffirms the shared values of religious freedom, mutual respect, inclusion, and human dignity while strengthening the visibility of Ambedkarite Buddhists on the global stage.
The association also expressed heartfelt gratitude to the International Buddhist Association of America, the White House Office of Faith, Buddhist monastic leaders, and diplomatic representatives for making the historic Vesak Day celebration a memorable and meaningful occasion.
